NSMS Community Council

Each school elects a school Community Council consisting of parents, teachers, and the principal. This council prepares a plan that identifies the school's greatest academic need(s). The school plan is approved by the local school board for implementation the following school year. The committee receives an annual dividend from the permanent State School Fund every July to implement your school's approved plan during the next school year.

Trustlands Funds for 2011-12:

Mathematics        Reading          Science       Writing

What will be done and how the money will be spent to improve student
academic performance.

We will decrease the number of students not proficient in language arts, math,
and science on core tests by 2-3%. We will decrease the number of students
failing to earn credit in one or more classes by 4-5%. We will use Land Trust
money to fund an academic tracker and pay for tutors in our after school
program.

Specific goals for student improvement.
We will continue our no-zero policy and our mandatory credit requirement. Funds
will be used to pay for an academic tracker to help track zeros and well as
students who are at risk of failing to earn credit. A credit recovery plan is in place
to help students who fail classes acquire necessary credits. Funds may be used
to support this project. We will offer support classes in math and pre-algebra for
students struggling in these areas. These classes will be funded through other
sources. We will offer structured reading classes for 7th and 8th grade students
who are reading below grade level. These classes will be funded through other
sources.

How academic improvement will be measured or assessed.
Progress in the number of students proficient will be measured by comparing
core test results of the 2010 and 2011 tests. The decrease in the number of
students failing to earn credit will be measured by comparing student grades
between the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.
If distributed funds are greater than estimated, the school will spend the
money to implement goals as follow:
We would like to use additional funds to purchase classroom reading books. We
will also use additional funds to purchase technology hardware and software.
This will further the use of technology in the classrooms for assessments. More
and more teachers are using technology on a regular basis for assessment as
well as other educational practices such as research.
This is how the plan relates to the School Improvement Plan:
Part of our school improvement plan is to improve academic achievement. This
plan supports the school improvement plan in that the student achievement goals
are the same for both plans. The school professional development plan which is
part of the school improvement plan will identify activities to help teachers and
teaching assistants learn instructional strategies and classroom practices that will
aid the school in meeting the student improvement goals.

How the school is implementing the 2009-2010 Plan and how the school
LAND Trust money is being spent.

We are running an after school tutoring program for students. Teachers stay
after school 2 days each week for up to an hour to give students additional help
in their core classes. Two of these days are paid for out of trustlands funds. The
other day is an early-out day for most students so teachers are still on contract
time. The school district provides transportation for the students who stay after
for tutoring.
We also have an academic tracker who is responsible to track student grades
and attendance. She helps keep track of students who need extra help in the
after school program. Half of her time is paid for out of trustland money, the
other half is out of at-risk funds.
plan

Briefly describe the School LAND Trust Plan

Academic Goals:
Enter specific academic goal(s) North Sanpete MD has set to improve student
performance with School LAND Trust money. Please describe specifically what
part of the goal is being supported by School LAND Trust money, if addressing
goal(s) will use additional funds. Be certain that these narratives and the
Financial Proposal agree.
We will decrease the number of students not proficient in language arts, math,
and science on core tests by 2-3%
We will decrease the number of students failing to earn credit in one or more
classes by 4-5%.
We will increase the number of students participating in healthy physical activities
through an intramural sports program.
We will show a 30% average gain on pre and post tests in the social studies
curriculum
Planned Steps:
Describe in detail the steps North Sanpete MD will take to reach each goal.
Describe specific actions (Hire a remediation reading teacher, purchase
microscopes for AP Biology class, provide professional development to improve
writing instruction) that will be taken to achieve the goal. In short, please provide
a road map to success. Be sure to identify any actions described in the planned
steps that will be funded with revenue other than School LAND Trust. If you will
be spending funds for professional development, please describe the planned
training and how it supports the goal and academic area of focus. Please
specifically explain what the funds will be used for (tuition for the course, travel,
substitute teachers).
We will continue our mandatory credit requirement. Students are required to
earn credit before moving on to the next level. We will continue to use an
academic tracker to track grades and attendance. This position will be funded
out of trustland funds.
A credit recovery plan is in place to help students who fail classes acquire
necessary credits. Funds may be used to support this project in the form of
salaries and possible computer purchases for online curriculum delivery.
We will offer support classes in math and pre-algebra for students struggling in
these areas. Classes will be funded through other sources.
We will offer tiered reading instruction for students who are reading below grade
level. These interventions will funded through other sources.
We will offer an after school intramural program. The purpose of this program is
to support healthy, safe activities for students, while incorporating more physical
activity and the understanding of basic health concepts into their lives. This
program will be funded with trustlands funds.
We will offer an afterschool tutoring program one night each week for the 7th and
8th grade students needing extra time. There will also be a credit recovery class
offered once each week in combination with the school intramural program.
Measuring Progress toward goals:
Which beginning and ending specific quantifiable measurements is North
Sanpete MD going to use to measure progress towards each goal? The same
beginning and ending measurements (test scores, number of library books
checked out, informal teaching assessment, etc) must be used so results can be
compared. What is the target to be achieved? Progress in the number of
students proficient will be measured by comparing core test results of the 2011
and 2012 tests.
The decrease in the number of students failing to earn credit will be measured by
comparing student grades between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.
Achievement in the social studies classes will be measured by comparing fall
pretests with spring post-tests.
Plans for expenditures of increased distribution:
The 2010 - 2011 distribution is an estimate. If the actual distribution is more than
the estimate, how will the school expand progress towards the goals described in
the plan, with an increased distribution? Please provide an adequate explanation
of academic use so that it will not be necessary to go back to the school board
for approval to expend an increased distribution. Please be aware it is not likely
that schools will see the kind of increases as in recent years, but some increase
is possible.

We would like to used additional funds to purchase classroom or library reading
books. We will also use additional funds to purchase technology hardware and
software. This will further the use of technology in the classrooms for
assessments and credit recovery efforts.
