Student Technology Use

North Sanpete School District provides access to technology resources—including devices, networks, internet access, and digital tools—to support instruction, communication, and student learning. Use of District technology is a privilege, not a right, and must be consistent with District policy, including Policy E-30 (Student Technology Acceptable Use).

This section applies to all students using District technology, whether on a District-issued device or a shared/classroom device.

Authorized Use

  • Complete school assignments and learning activities
  • Communicate with teachers and school staff
  • Access educational materials and resources
  • Participate in approved school programs

Prohibited Conduct

Consistent with Policy E-30, students may not use District technology to:

  • Attempt to bypass internet filters, monitoring systems, or security controls
  • Access, create, or distribute content that is harmful, obscene, threatening, or unlawful
  • Engage in harassment, bullying, or discrimination
  • Violate copyright or intellectual property laws
  • Access or attempt to access unauthorized systems or accounts
  • Disrupt or damage District systems or operations

Student Safety

Students should not disclose personal information (such as home address, phone number, or passwords) when using District technology. Students are expected to report unsafe or inappropriate online content or interactions to school staff.

Monitoring and System Use

District technology systems are school-managed resources.

Consistent with Policy E-30:

  • The District may monitor and review system usage when there is a legitimate educational, safety, or operational reason
  • Monitoring may include internet activity, files, communications, and system access
  • Students should understand that use of District systems is subject to oversight; however, monitoring is conducted for school-related purposes and not for unrelated or personal reasons

Violations and Consequences

Failure to follow District technology expectations may result in:

  • Temporary or permanent loss of technology privileges
  • School disciplinary action consistent with District policy
  • Additional consequences, including referral to law enforcement, when required

Consequences will be determined based on the nature and severity of the violation.

Take-Home Use

Some students may be assigned a District device for use outside of school. This section establishes expectations for care and use of those devices and clarifies responsibilities. Students who do not take devices home will still have access to District technology at school.

Device Use Expectations

Students who take devices home must:

  • Use the device in accordance with Policy E-30
  • Keep the device secure and under their control
  • Avoid exposing the device to damage or misuse
  • Bring the device to school as required
  • Report damage, loss, or malfunction promptly

Ownership and Control

All District-issued devices remain the property of North Sanpete School District.

The District reserves the right to:

  • Inspect devices
  • Require return of devices at any time
  • Manage and restrict software, applications, and system access

Damage, Loss, or Misuse

Parents/guardians may be financially responsible for damage or loss resulting from:

  • Negligence or misuse
  • Failure to take reasonable care
  • Failure to return the device

Examples may include:

  • Cracked screens
  • Liquid damage
  • Broken components
  • Lost or stolen devices not reasonably secured

Each situation will be reviewed individually. Normal wear and tear will not result in charges.

Lost or Stolen Devices

If a device is lost or stolen:

  • The school must be notified immediately
  • A police report may be requested in cases of theft
  • Timely reporting will be considered when determining responsibility

Optional Device Protection Program

The District offers access to a voluntary device protection plan through a third-party provider. This program is designed to reduce potential financial responsibility for accidental damage or loss.

Coverage May Include

  • Accidental damage
  • Screen breakage
  • Liquid damage
  • Battery replacement
  • Fire or flood damage
  • Theft (subject to policy terms)
